Apellix Was Building Working Drones Before the Category Was Hot
Apellix is the earlier, engineering-led company in the U.S. cleaning-drone story. It was founded in Jacksonville in 2014, traces key patent families to that year, and manufactures in the United States. It is fair to call Apellix founder-led and comparatively lightly funded. Public sources do not support calling it completely bootstrapped, wholly founder-owned, or the holder of a named federal defense prime contract.

A patent-led company built around aerial work
Working Drones, doing business as Apellix, developed aircraft to do physical work rather than only observe it. Patent families with 2014 priority dates describe aerial systems for applying materials and cleaning surfaces, including water, soap, and washing operations.
Apellix's published history says the company was founded in Jacksonville in 2014 and received its first U.S. patents in 2018. The patents are the stronger point: they show years of technical work before the pressure-washing-drone market had broad visibility.

Founder-led is accurate. Fully bootstrapped is not established.
Florida records identify Robert Dahlstrom as president, and he remains the public founder and CEO. That supports 'founder-led.' Public funding profiles and a Department of Energy portfolio document indicate outside early capital or fundraising activity, so saying the business was entirely bootstrapped or 100% founder-owned would go beyond the evidence.
The honest contrast is still sharp: Apellix developed through a comparatively light, founder-led path while Lucid raised institutional venture rounds totaling $34 million.

What the Army and NDAA claims actually support
Apellix says its Blue model complies with NDAA Sections 848 and 889, and it describes its cleaning platform as certified and flown by the U.S. Army. The company's history dates the Army work to 2022.
Those are manufacturer-published claims. They do not, by themselves, prove a named federal prime contract or a current Blue UAS listing. SkyPSI does not inflate them into one. The defensible point is that Apellix built a U.S.-made configuration specifically around government supply-chain requirements and has documented Army use.

The longer company history, patent base, U.S. manufacturing, hardware package, and field media all matter. The final reason is the business SkyPSI adds around it: training, support, loaner assurance, and, on the full commercial pathway, one guaranteed paid job after qualification.
